A thought about LCD displays

Post by pfeerick » Thu Feb 19, 2015 7:03 am

Hi Mark, Paul,

I was wondering since Paul had been having some much trouble with the LCD version of the charger, due to inconsistent / faulty displays, if he had thought of going the route of using off-the-shelf modular displays. You can buy a 2.2" colour TFT LCD for about $5 on ebay (inc postage), 2.4" colour TFT LCDs with touch matrix for $6.70 or even 1.8" colour TFT LCDs for about $4.50. I've personally used two of the 1.8" modules and had one running 24x7 for more than a month now. They're easy to interface with, and use a SPI interface. There is also a SD card slot on the back of the display.

Just a thought. Was just thinking the other day these are prefect for this use as if they pack up, you just remove the module and shove in a replacement.

Cheers, Peter

Hi Peter,

My apologies for the delay in responding.

The 1.8" LCD that you linked to is essentially the same as the one that was being used on the LCD charger. Having the display connected externally would be possible and would allow it to be easily replaced if it were to fail. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be very neat - unless you were to mount it on a separate daughter board or something like that - that wouldn't be too bad, although it would add a bit to the cost unfortunately.

I think that the biggest problem with doing this is that it would only solve one of the problems that were plaguing the LCD charger - if the LCD was the only problem, then I think that this could have been a worthwhile solution...
