Without knowing the actual characteristics of the ESD diodes, it's hard to say for sure one way or the other.

The data sheet says that leakage current will start to flow if the voltage on any of the input pins drops below -0.3V, so it may be that with the 10k resistors, there isn't enough current flowing for the voltage to drop below -0.4V.

Probably safest to assume that it might cause damage and make sure that cells aren't inserted the wrong way...
